GUWAHATI, Sep 1: The University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya (USTM) on Friday remembered former Lok Sabha Speaker and former Meghalaya chief minister Late P A Sangma as an exemplary statesman and source of inspiration, at a function held at the university on the occasion of his 76th birth anniversary.
USTM chancellor M. Hoque, vice-chancellor G.D Sharma, officers, students and staff of the university participated in the celebration and paid floral tributes to the great personality.
Addressing the gathering, USTM chancellor Hoque said Late Sangma has been an all-time inspiration and a great support to the university since its inception.
“In his memory, USTM is now coming up with the PA Sangma International Medical College and Hospital, a state-of-the-art multi-specialty hospital and college that has been recently approved by the Meghalaya Cabinet,” he said.
Notably, the foundation of the medical college was laid last year by chief minister Conrad Sangma and construction work for the same is currently underway.
Speaking on the occasion, USTM vice-chancellor Sharma said, “At USTM, memories of Late PA Sangma are treasured in the form of a Chair for Tribal Research and a university block is also named after him. This has been done so that the future generations remember this great national personality from the Northeast and draw inspiration from his deeds and ideals”.
