SHILLONG, Sep 2: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) has constituted a committee to look into the safety and security of people at the Iewduh market and its six adjoining localities.
The committee will also ensure that proper hygiene and cleanliness are maintained at this market.
The committee will be headed by KHADC Chief Executive Member, Pyniaid Sing Syiem. Executive Member in-charge of Market, Grace Mary Kharpuri and Executive Member in-charge of Solid Waste Management, Victor Ranee are its members.
Talking to reporters after meeting shopkeepers at the Iewduh market, Syiem said the decision to form the committee was taken subsequent to an inspection of the market recently.
Stating that the council has already notified the formation of the committee, Syiem said it will also consist of Additional District Magistrate, Ronnie Wahlang; Sector Police Officer, Bipul Das and a representative from the Urban Affairs department.
According to him, the Rangbah Shnongs of the six localities adjoining the Iewduh market such as Wahingdoh, Umsohsun, Wahthapbru, Qualapatty, Mawkhar and Mission Compound will also be the members of the committee.
Syiem expressed concern over non-tribal roadside hawkers operating at the Iewduh market without obtaining a trading license from the council. He asked them to apply for a trading license.
He took exception to certain Khasi women who are allegedly trying to protect the non-tribal traders doing their business illegally. He said it is unfortunate to see Khasi women coming forward to claim that the business belongs to them when it is an open secret that it belongs to the non-tribal traders. “It is not right to use ‘jain kyrshah’ (traditional yet informal attire of Khasi women) to protect these non-tribal traders,” Syiem said.
He said the council will install CCTV cameras and streetlights at the Iewduh market as part of the measure to ensure the safety and security of people who visit the market.
Meanwhile, the council has constituted a committee for the implementation of Solid Waste Management Programme.
