Guwahati, Sept 4: Two more accused, including a former superintendent of police of Bajali, have been arrested in a graft case registered by the criminal investigation department (CID) of Assam Police following a complaint of demand for money by some police officers, taking the number of persons arrested in the case to nine.

The arrested persons include Shiddhartha Buragohain, the then SP, Bajali and Pushkal Gogoi, the then deputy SP (headquarters), Bajali, who was in CID custody and interrogated after detention. They have been forwarded to the court and taken on police remand for further investigation, an official statement said on Monday..

Till Sunday, seven persons, including an additional SP, were arrested in the case (number 14/2023), which was registered CID police station on Thursday under Sections 120B/341/342/323/448/294/379/387/427/506/307of IPC read with Sections 98A/99(3)(4)(5)(6) of the Assam Police Act, 2007.

Among those arrested and taken on police remand on Sunday are Gayatri Sonowal, the then additional SP Bajali; Subhas Chander, the husband of the then additional SP Bajali and Kishor Baruah.

Till Saturday, four personnel – sub-inspector (P) Debajit Giri, in-charge, Bhawanipur outpost under Patacharkuchi police station; armed branch constable Injamamul Hassan, PSO of Gayatri Sonowal, the then additional SP (HQ), Bajali;  homeguard (driver) Deepjoy Kalita, driver of SP, Bajali and homeguard (driver) Nabir Ahmed, part-time driver of SP, Bajali – were arrested and taken on five days’ police remand.

Assam DGP Gyanendra Pratap Singh had also informed that the Assam Police headquarters had, in connection with an incident in Bajali, “received a complaint of demand for money by some police officers of Bajali during the first week of August.”

Subsequently, the directorate of vigilance and anti-corruption was directed to lay a trap but couldn’t succeed since the police officers were careful, the DGP said.

“However, the complaint was found to be prima facie true. On the basis of it, a criminal case has been registered on August 31 at Assam CID vide CID police station,” Singh said.
