Shillong, September 5: Typhoon Haikui, the 11th typhoon of the year, made landfall in China’s eastern Fujian province and southern Guangdong province.

As per IANS, it hit Dongshan county in Fujian at around 5.20 am and Raoping County in Guangdong at about 6.45 a.m. The typhoon brought gales of up to 20 and 18 meters per second near its center, as reported by Xinhua news agency.

Haikui is expected to move westward at a speed of 10 to 15 km per hour and gradually weaken, according to the Guangdong meteorological observatory.

Before reaching China, the typhoon made landfall in Taiwan on Sunday.

In preparation for the typhoon, evacuation tasks were completed in all sea areas east of Huizhou city in Guangdong. Thousands of fishing boats, fishing personnel, offshore wind power workers, and marine ranching personnel found shelter. Coastal scenic spots were closed, and transportation was affected with the suspension of trains and sea passenger routes.

Classes were also suspended in certain cities such as Shantou and Chaozhou.

The National Meteorological Centre issued a yellow alert for rainstorms in parts of south and east China, warning of heavy downpours, rainstorms, and possible flooding. Local governments were advised to prepare for rainstorms and implement traffic control measures in affected areas. Additionally, safety precautions such as disconnecting outdoor power supplies and transferring people from dangerous areas were recommended.
