Global 5G subscriptions surge by 175 million in Q2

Shillong, September 5: A recent report has revealed a substantial growth in global 5G subscriptions, with an increase of 175 million in the second quarter (Q2).

Notably, India led in net additions of overall mobile subscriptions, welcoming over seven million new users during this period.

As per IANS, this surge in Q2 brings the total global count of 5G subscriptions close to 1.3 billion, as detailed in the Ericsson Mobility Report.

In Q2, the total number of mobile subscriptions reached 8.3 billion, with a net addition of 40 million subscriptions during the quarter. The report also indicated that there were 6.1 billion unique mobile subscribers.

India recorded the highest number of net additions in the quarter, surpassing seven million. Following India, China had five million new mobile subscribers, and the US added three million.

The report also noted that approximately 260 communications service providers (CSPs) worldwide have launched commercial 5G services, and about 35 CSPs have introduced 5G standalone (SA) networks.

The global mobile subscription penetration rate stood at 105 percent in the second quarter.

Mobile broadband subscriptions saw significant growth, increasing by around 100 million during the quarter, totaling 7.4 billion. This represents a year-on-year increase of 5 percent. Mobile broadband now constitutes 88 percent of all mobile subscriptions.

Furthermore, mobile data traffic showed a remarkable 33 percent growth between Q2 2022 and Q2 2023. 4G subscriptions also saw an increase of 11 million, reaching a total of approximately 5.2 billion, accounting for 62 percent of all mobile subscriptions.
