Shillong, September 7: Apple is reportedly pouring substantial resources, with investments amounting to millions of dollars daily, into the development of various artificial intelligence (AI) conversational models, intensifying the competition in the field of generative AI.

According to a report from The Information, Apple is actively working on multiple AI models through various teams. One of their objectives is to create features that enable iPhone users to perform complex tasks with simple voice commands. For instance, users may instruct Siri to create a GIF using their last five photos and send it to a friend, eliminating the need for manual programming of individual actions.

John Giannandrea, Apple’s head of AI, initiated the formation of a team focused on developing conversational AI models four years ago, well before the emergence of ChatGPT.

Apple is reportedly working on a chatbot that will interact with customers using AppleCare, as well as another AI model designed to streamline multistep tasks with Siri.

One of Apple’s most advanced large-language models (LLM), referred to as Ajax GPT, has been trained on an astounding “more than 200 billion parameters” and is purportedly more powerful than OpenAI’s GPT-3.5, according to inside sources.

Apple has not officially commented on this report. However, Apple CEO Tim Cook recently disclosed that the company has been dedicated to generative AI and other models for years. Cook emphasized that AI and machine learning are fundamental core technologies integrated into virtually every Apple product.

While Apple has been actively involved in AI and machine learning research, including generative AI, it has historically been reserved in discussing these efforts, as evidenced by its latest quarterly report, which provided minimal insight into this aspect of the company’s work.
