Atlanta (Georgia): India’s Somdev Devvarman went down 4-6, 3-6 to top seed and defending champion Mardy Fish of the US in the men’s singles quarterfinals of the Atlanta Tennis Championships.

Fish recovered from an early break of serve to take control of the match that lasted 52 minutes.

The American was leading 5-0 in the second set but fumbled on two match points against the Indian’s serve. It took him three more games to finally to close the match.

“The weather was rough, I was too eager to get off the court,” said Fish.

“I played one bad game and rushed a bit.”

Fish spent 52 minutes in claiming the first set against India’s Devvarman despite poor early form. The American struggled at times with more than 20 unforced errors and capitalizing on only one of seven break points through the first eight games. He now plays American teenager Ryan Harrison who rallied to beat Rajeev Ram 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7/5)

John Isner, vying to improve on his runner-up finish last year, lost just seven points on serve as he crushed Lu Yen-Hsun of Taiwan 6-1, 6-2. (Agencies)
