Shillong, September 11: A 39-year-old Indian-origin man faces charges for allegedly attacking another man with a knife, resulting in a deep shoulder wound, as per police reports.

Michael Nganasekaran, arrested on Sunday in connection with the attack on Shanmugam Vegatachalam, 40, has been charged with a single count of causing injury with a dangerous weapon in court.

As per IANS, the police were alerted to a brawl in the vicinity of Jalan Besar on September 9. Preliminary investigations suggest that Nganasekaran and Vegatachalam were engaged in a dispute, during which Nganasekaran allegedly used a knife.

Within eight hours, officers from the Central Police Division identified and apprehended Nganasekaran through ground inquiries and police camera footage.

Two knives and the victim’s shirt were seized as case exhibits. Nganasekaran faces charges under Section 324 of the Penal Code, 1871.

Vegatachalam reportedly suffered a 2 cm cut on his left shoulder.

Singapore police emphasized their “zero tolerance for such brazen acts of violence” and reminded the public that carrying offensive or scheduled weapons in public places is an offense.

The charge of voluntarily causing harm with a dangerous weapon carries a penalty of up to seven years’ imprisonment, a fine, caning, or a combination of these punishments.

In court, Nganasekaran, speaking through a Tamil interpreter, claimed he did not intend to injure the victim and suggested that both he and the victim were armed with knives. He also mentioned a third person’s involvement in the incident.

The court granted permission for Nganasekaran to be remanded for further investigations, with a return to court scheduled for the following Monday.
