SHILLONG, Sep 12: The Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) and the United Democratic Party (UDP) on Tuesday vehemently opposed the Centre’s proposal of implementing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) citing its effect on the unique culture and traditions of Meghalaya.
In a letter to the Chief Minister, HSPDP president KP Pangniang clarified the party’s stance.
The letter stated that Meghalaya’s uniqueness with regards to customs and traditions, inheritance of property etc., will be diluted with the implementation of the UCC, and further meddle with the provisions and mandate guaranteed by the Constitution of India under Article 29 and 244 along with the Sixth Schedule.
Speaking on similar lines, UDP leader and Nongpoh MLA, Mayralborn Syiem outrightly stated that the implementation of UCC is unacceptable to him as it would clash with the customary laws and practices in the state. “We, therefore, urge the government along with the Autonomous District Councils not to allow the implementation of UCC in our state which will adversely affect the unique identity, customs and traditions, demographic structure of the state, etc,” the letter by HSPDP read.
