Laban Bengalee Boys’ HS School earns praise for producing eminent personalities

SHILLONG, Sep 13: The curtains came down on the centenary celebrations of Laban Bengalee Boys’ Higher Secondary School here on Wednesday at a glittering function held in the august presence of Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, Education Minister Rakkam Sangma, former Education Minister Manas Chaudhuri, School Managing Committee president SK Chattopadhaya, and Principal R Bhattacharjee.
The centenary celebration commenced with the school principal’s welcome speech, followed by remarks from the president of the school managing committee.
The dignitaries then lit a ceremonial lamp to symbolise the occasion.
During the event, the guests on the dais unveiled the centenary souvenir called ‘Sangbikshan’ and a book on ‘Linguistic Minority Institutions of Meghalaya’.
Established in 1923, the school has consistently produced top-performing students in the state, both in SSLC and HSSLC examinations.
In his speech, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma acknowledged the school’s journey and offered support for any upgrades they may need, emphasizing its contribution in providing quality education in the state.
He stated, “Let me assure you again, I am happy to help the school in whatever way I can. I would urge the managing committee to have a discussion with the education minister. We may not be able to fulfill every request, but we are here to support your efforts to advance our society, state, and youth.”
Before his speech, the Chief Minister also honoured the HSSLC 2023 toppers
Arnab Dutta and Subham Das, who secured 1st and 4th positions respectively in the Science stream, and Rishob Puryakastha and Akshat Das, who achieved 1st and 4th positions respectively in the Commerce stream.
The Education Minister, Rakkam Sangma, who served as the guest of honour, quoted late Lok Sabha Speaker PA Sangma, emphasising the paramount importance of education.
He also discussed plans to introduce smart classes and affirmed the state education department’s commitment towards supporting the school’s pursuit of excellence.
Former Principal of St. Edmund’s College, Sylvanus Lamare also shared a message congratulating the school for its 100 years of service to the youth.
Recognising the contribution of the Bengali community towards education of the downtrodden who could not afford education, Lamare said, “The great contribution of the Bengali community towards education needs to be recognised in our state. In the past in every education institution, the presence of Bengali teachers was seen.”
“Today is the day to recognise and pay homage to the visionaries who started the school 100 years ago and I congratulate the current management along with the teachers who continue to work hard. I urge upon the school and all to join hand in achieving motto ‘From ignorance to light’,” he added.
