Shillong, Sept 15: The Assembly on Friday paid tributes to the three former legislators—Nit Shabong, Endro Iawphniaw and Gilfred Sing Giri—during the first day of the autumn session.

Participating in the obituary reference, Chief Minister, Conrad K. Sangma said that the States and the country have lost 21 political leaders in the past six months and three of them are from the State.

According to him, the demise of the great leaders is a great loss to many of the states and the country as a whole.

Meanwhile, Assembly Speaker, Thomas Sangma said that he would like to express his condolences to the bereaved families on the passing away of the different political personalities.

He said that he has not had any personal acquaintance with the three late political leaders of the State.

“But what I could see from the obituary notes all the three departed leaders were very popular leaders during their times,” Sangma said.

Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition, Ronnie V. Lyngdoh said that the late Nit Shabong who represented Sohiong constituency was a very dynamic person and was a leader who was very concerned about the welfare of the people of his constituency.

“I remember he used to take up the congestion of Iew Mawlong and then how to connect one of the areas of his constituency Shilliang Um with Shillong. He had initiated a road project to connect the village with Shillong but of course the road has been left incomplete,” Lyngdoh said.

He further said that he was such a person who had the interest of his constancy and the state at heart.

Stating that he does now know late Endro Iawphniaw personally, Leader of Opposition said that he had served as a minister of the state and must have contributed to the welfare of the state.

Lyngdoh said that he is sure that even late Gilfred Sing Giri in his capacity as a legislator was committed to the welfare of the people and of the state in general.
