SHILLONG: The State Government wants to take multi-pronged approach to deal with the issue of influx without depending on the single strategy of ILP, according to Chief Secretary WMS Pariat.

Speaking to reporters here on Thursday, Pariat said “What Government wants to implement is not a single strategy as there are various methods before Government to tackle the problem of influx.”

Besides the proposed Tenancy Act, there are six to seven measures which Government is planning to implement to check influx, he said.

According to Chief Secretary, strengthening of anti-infiltration directorate, activation of migrant workmen act, setting up of district level task force on influx, compulsory registration of marriages and various district council acts can be used to control influx.

The Chief Secretary also said Government was trying other means to check influx as implementation of ILP is no viable in the State.

On the worsening law and order situation due to the ongoing agitations, Chief Secretary said that a move is on to make the agitating NGOs accountable for the loss incurred during the agitations by following the guidelines of Supreme Court and Gauhati High Court regarding the ban on bandh.

According to the ruling related to ban on bandh and other forms of agitations, the organizations who call the bandh will have to bear the financial loss during their agitations.

Publicity campaign

The State Government will initiate publicity campaigns on the demerits of ILP to counter the move of the pro-ILP groups demanding implementation of ILP.

“We are preparing the publicity materials to tell people on the defects of ILP”, Pariat said
