Meghalaya Assembly looks to AI for enhanced efficiency

SHILLONG, Sep 21: In keeping with the current era of digital innovation, the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, which is busy with the ongoing autumn session, has managed to augment its efficiency with the use of artificial intelligence (AI).
Under the direction and inspiration of the Speaker, Thomas A Sangma, the state Assembly has harnessed the power of AI to transcribe the proceedings of the House, marking a significant step towards digitalisation.
The Chief Reporter of the Assembly Secretariat, Arnica Lyngdoh, in coordination with Dapborlang Marwein, Computer Programmer, IT Cell, Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, spearheaded the initiative to revolutionise the reporting process within the Assembly for enhancing efficiency and accuracy.
The collaboration between the Reporter’s Branch and the IT Cell has yielded remarkable results, Commissioner and Secretary, Meghalaya Assembly, said.
“The implementation of AI as a tool in the Reporter’s Branch is expected to significantly expedite the reporting process, reduce errors, and provide legislators with more timely and accurate information. It stands as a testament to Meghalaya’s dedication to embracing technological advancements for the betterment of its legislative functions,” he said, while asserting that the use of AI in legislative reporting is setting a commendable example for other Assemblies to follow in the digital age.
According to Computer Programmer Marwein, the Reporter’s Module, which is a part of the NeVA (National e-Vidhan Application) project, has been seamlessly implemented during the autumn session of 2023.
The Speaker has expressed his satisfaction with the new AI tool, emphasizing its assistance to the Assembly’s reporters and its significant acceleration of the transcription process for House proceedings.
The Commissioner and Secretary also expressed his satisfaction and pride on the achievement of the new efforts made as part of digitalisation of the Assembly Secretariat and the commendable effort made by the IT Cell and the Reporters Branch, jointly.
