SHILLONG, Sep 21: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Thursday made it clear that he would not oppose the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) based on mere assumptions without actually knowing the content of the bill.
“Let there be no doubt that we are against any kind of move, by anybody, even the Parliament…where there are laws that are brought to dilute our culture, our practices or our laws, this House will unitedly oppose it,” the CM stated.
“However it will not be the appropriate for the House to follow to pass a resolution based on assumptions and presumptions,” the CM added, while urging Congress MLA Charles Marngar, the mover of the resolution, to withdraw it.
While bringing the resolution, Marngar noted that if the UCC is implemented, it will dilute the interests of the minorities and the state as a whole.
He pointed out that the KHADC and the JHADC had passed resolutions to oppose the UCC.
The resolution was supported by TMC legislators Charles Pyngrope, Miani D Shira and Mukul Sangma, VPP legislators Adelbert Nongrum, Heaving Stone Kharpran and Congress MLAs Saleng Sangma and Ronnie V Lyngdoh.
