Shillong, September 25: Google has revealed plans for a new transatlantic subsea cable system, Nuvem, aimed at enhancing its global internet infrastructure. Nuvem, named after the Portuguese word for “cloud,” is set to bolster network resiliency across the Atlantic, addressing the growing demand for digital services.

As per IANS, this innovative cable path will introduce international route diversity and play a pivotal role in advancing information and communications technology (ICT) infrastructure across the involved continents and nations, according to Google’s official statement.

Notably, Nuvem will mark the first-ever connection between Bermuda and Europe, a development welcomed by Walter Roban, Bermuda’s Deputy Premier and Minister of Home Affairs, highlighting Bermuda’s commitment to the submarine cable market.

Portugal, strategically located in southwestern mainland Europe, has emerged as a crucial hub for subsea cables. The country’s dedication to strengthening digital infrastructure has aligned with Google’s vision. Joao Galamba, Portugal’s Minister of Infrastructure, sees Google’s investment as a means to establish Portugal as a thriving connectivity gateway for Europe and foster robust global connections.

On the US side, Nuvem will land in South Carolina, further solidifying the state’s status as a growing technology center. This expansion is expected to boost connectivity and diversify job opportunities.

Following in the footsteps of the recently landed Firmina cable, which will eventually connect Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay, Nuvem is slated for service readiness in 2026. Its deployment will significantly enhance capacity, reliability, and reduce latency for Google users and Google Cloud customers worldwide.
