SHILLONG, Sep 26: The ruling NPP on Tuesday exuded confidence of a good outing in next year’s Lok Sabha polls and said the Voice of the People Party (VPP) will fall short of making an impact since “boundaries of religion, tribe or culture” prevents a politician from being accepted as a leader.
Making a veiled attack on the VPP, NPP leader and Cabinet minister Rakkam A Sangma dismissed any threat to the NPP from the former in the Shillong Parliamentary seat. “They are a new party and they have to go a long way to grow and inspire,” he said.
“India is a vast and diverse nation and Meghalaya has been also brought about by the brotherhood of many tribes and individuals and they should work together and never draw a line in between,” he continued.
Reiterating that the VPP will fail to make an impact in the Parliamentary elections, he said, “It is a challenging task for any political party to have an impact on the entire state.”
As it stands, the VPP has already announced Ricky AJ Syngkon as its candidate from the Shillong seat.
For the NPP, incumbent Lok Sabha member Agatha Sangma is expected to seek re-election from the Tura seat while the party is yet to announce its candidate for the Shillong seat.
