Guwahati, Sept 27: Assam Trinamool Congress has reiterated its willingness to contest five parliamentary seats in Assam in next year’s Lok Sabha elections and that a proposal would soon be placed in this regard before the 26-party “INDIA” alliance, of which the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) is also a constituent.

Addressing mediapersons here on Wednesday, Dilip Kumar Sharma, chairman, media department, Assam Trinamool Congress said the party was all geared up to contest five out of the 14 parliamentary seats in Assam and that state party president Ripun Bora has had a threadbare discussion in this regard with AITC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee in Kolkata on Tuesday.

“State party president Ripun Bora discussed the matter with the AITC national general secretary in regard to the party’s seat sharing with the alliance partners of “INDIA” in the Lok Sabha elections, which is just about six months away, and that a proposal from the party to contest in five seats will soon be placed before the 26-party alliance,” Sharma said.

He further said key organisational matters were also discussed between the state party chief and the AITC national general secretary in a bid to strengthen the party in Assam.

Notably, the Assam TMC president had, last month, disclosed the names of the first three constituencies – Darrang, Lakhimpur, and Kokrajhar – the party was looking forward to field candidates from.

On the other hand, Sharma said the state party president has been assured by the West Bengal government that legendary artiste and music maestro Bhupen Hazarika’s residence in Tollygunge would be preserved as a “heritage site”.

Party sources said that the Assam TMC president Bora has written several letters to the Bengal government in regard to the announcement of the music maestro’s residence as a heritage site.

“A meeting in this regard was held with the state’s power minister and that the state party president has been informed that the music maestro’s residence has been procured by the Bengal government and that steps would soon be taken to preserve it as a heritage site,” the TMC office-bearer said.

He further informed that a memorandum has been submitted to the West Bengal government by the Assam Trinamool Congress chief in regard to developing the historic Madhupur Satra in Cooch Behar.
