SHILLONG, Sep 28: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Thursday cautioned Meghalaya and Assam governments to not take any incidents, including the recent one in Lapangap village in West Jaintia Hills, lightly as things might flare up leading to loss of lives.
TMC vice-president George B Lyngdoh sniffed that some elements are at work with a “nefarious design” to stoke animosity and bring destruction upon the peace-loving communities in the Northeast by opening up old wounds.
“We have seen that happen in Manipur. We now see it on the Assam-Meghalaya border. It seems there is a certain nefarious design that is being carried out in order to disrupt the Northeast. Whether these are foreign or anti-social elements, these incidents cannot be taken lightly,” Lyngdoh said referring to the interstate boundary skirmish between Karbi and Khasi-Pnar communities along Lapangap area in West Jaintia Hills.
He asked both states to ensure that there is no misunderstanding between communities and to not ignore even a small incident on the border as it might flare up and the two governments will hardly get time to respond to the situation.
Recalling that clashes between Khasi-Pnar and Karbi communities took place also in the past, Lyngdoh said, “We see the same thing in Manipur. Here also, Karbi-Khasi conflicts keep occurring.”
He said the violence, as well as resultant loss of lives in Manipur, was a huge humanitarian crisis for the Northeast and the country.
