SHILLONG, Sep 29: Shillong Obstetrics and Gynecological Society of Meghalaya (SOGS) celebrated its silver jubilee-cum-annual conference here on Friday.
Founded by former medical superintendent of Ganesh Das Hospital and one of Shillong’s seasoned gynaecologists, Dr SW Dkhar in July 1998, SOGS has since grown to almost 50 members, serving Meghalaya in various capacities, both in the private and government sectors.
The society’s objective was to provide ONG specialists a platform to share current and recent advances, benefiting not only Meghalaya but also the entire northeastern region.
‘Eclampsia and postpartum hemorrhage were identified as significant contributors to maternal deaths in Meghalaya and SOGS is working towards equipping the medical officers with new age technology so that they can do their best in reducing the high Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR)’, President of SOGS Dr Guiding Wahlang said while speaking at the conference.
Sutnga Saipung MLA, Santa Mary Shylla who was the chief guest lauded the efforts of the doctors and the community for their service to the society.
The ceremony also featured the release of a commemorative souvenir and the felicitation of founding members of the society by the legislator.
The event also had in attendance Dr Purna Chandra Mahaptra and Dr Gokul Chandra Das, renowned names in the world of Gynaecology and Obstetrics.
The evening started with harmonious notes by the music department of St. Anthony’s, following which the symbolic lamp was lit by the guests on the dais.
