SHILLONG: Leaders of the Opposition UDP would gather on Monday to discuss the prevailing situation in the State.

“We would try to work out ways and means to end this current stalemate. This confronting attitude of the State Government is adding fuel to this fiery situation,” UDP working president, Paul Lyngdoh, informed here on Sunday.

Maintaining that the prevailing tension in the State should not be considered as a law and order issue, Lyngdoh insisted on a political resolution to the issue of influx.

“This is a genuine issue which needs to be treated with the right earnest. We must not forget that this issue has been lingering for the past many decades,” Lyngdoh said.

Lyngdoh was of the view that the Congress-led MUA Government should respect the sentiments of the people of the State. “The Government should accept the growing demand for implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system with some modifications to suit the local conditions, topography and economic interests of the local indigenous people.

“As it stands at present, the best possible mechanism to address the issue of influx and flow of illegal immigrants is the implementation of the ILP,” Lyngdoh added.

Meanwhile, the UDP working president also informed that his party would be sending a delegation to attend a meeting convened by the KHNAM on Tuesday to device strategies to pressurize the Government to implement the ILP in the State.
