SHILLONG, Sep 30: Cabinet minister and NPP spokesperson, Ampareen Lyngdoh has termed the decision of the BJP-led central government to organise the cleaning drive under “Swachhata Hi Seva” campaign on a Sunday as unfair.
“The people should ignore the government’s programme and avoid participating in it. We can always postpone the cleaning drive to another day. This decision is not acceptable,” Lyngdoh said.
She said she failed to understand why the BJP government takes these steps despite knowing that people will oppose them.
“Personally, I am not going to take part in the cleaning drive since I have to go to church…I am a devout Catholic and a staunch Christian. Nobody can convince me to do any work on a Sunday,” the minister said.
Lyngdoh also recalled that she did not attend the second day of the meeting of the Assembly Speaker’s conference which was held recently in Shillong since it fell on a Sunday.
She said she attended the first day of the programme.
The Voice of the People Party (VPP) has already expressed its displeasure at the decision to organise the cleaning drive on Sunday on the eve of the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
VPP said it was a direct attempt to dishonour the sentiments of the Christians.
