Shillong, October 3: Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, announced an increase in the daily minimum wages for tea garden workers by Rs 18.
As per IANS, the decision was made during a cabinet meeting chaired by the Chief Minister on Monday night and will be effective from October 1.
Chief Minister Sarma stated, “The government has decided to raise the minimum daily wages for tea garden workers. Starting from October 1, the daily wage in the Brahmaputra valley will be raised from Rs 232 to Rs 250, while laborers in the Barak Valley will see their wages increase from Rs 210 to Rs 228.”
Sarma also informed reporters that the state government has directed garden managers to provide a 20% incentive to workers for the upcoming Durga Puja festival.
Furthermore, he added, “With immediate effect, there will be a 3% reservation in government posts for tea garden workers, with only the non-creamy layer eligible for this benefit.”
In another development, the cabinet meeting also approved the creation of the new Bajali district by dividing the existing Barpeta district.
