NONGSTOIN, Oct 4: As ILP implementation in the state continues to hang fire, the Hynniewtrep A’chik National Movement (HANM) West Khasi Hills District has decided to implement its own Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the entire district.
This was decided in the executive committee meeting of the group held here on Wednesday. Speaking to media persons, president of HANM, West Khasi Hills District, Willstone Sohshang, said that the organisation will start operations with raids in the district and chase away outsiders, if found without valid documents.
Sohshang also said that the district has three ongoing major road projects — Nongstoin-Rambrai, Nongstoin-Maweit, and Nongstoin-Wahkaji roads — and most of the outsiders claim to be employees of the companies undertaking these projects.
“We are not against outsiders coming to the district to work if the work cannot be done by the Khasi people or the locals of that area, however, in most cases, even small jobs that can be done by our local people are taken by outsiders, and we will not allow this to happen,” he said.
Sohshang also expressed concern over the ‘inability’ of the central government to implement ILP in Meghalaya, which has been demanded by the Hynniewtrep people through a resolution passed in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.
The organisation has urged the Dorbar Hima (traditional tribal councils) and the Dorbar Shnong (village councils) to monitor the rising number of outsiders and cooperate with the HANM in its operations.
