SHILLONG, Oct 4: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Wednesday quashing misconceptions about Meghalaya withdrawing its police forces from disputed border areas stated that the major movement is being done by Assam, and Meghalaya is only reciprocating to bring both sides to neutrality.
The chief minister was answering a query regarding opposition to the withdrawal of state police force from the disputed border areas.
“Meghalaya will also show confidence and reciprocate the same, but the main movement will be done by Assam,” he said.
“Therefore, it is wrong to say that we are moving backwards”, Sangma stated.
It may be mentioned that Sangma and his Assam counterpart Himanta Biswa Sarma had met on Saturday as part of the second phase of border talks and decided to withdraw state police forces from the disputed areas and employ neutral forces like the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).
Sangma also mentioned that one of the discussions that happened during the meeting was Assam agreeing to withdraw its border outposts from several locations in the undisputed border sectors falling under the purview of Meghalaya.
Talking about calling back the Justice Vaiphei Commission set to up to investigate the Mukroh firing incident, Sangma stated that the state commissions were not able to come to the same page, and therefore they decided to withdraw and seek a neutral agency to investigate the incident, which was anyway a demand from the first day.
