SHILLONG: Union Minister of Stae for Information and Broadcasting Manish Tewari has said Congress does not believe in the policy of projecting any particular leader as the prime ministerial candidate of the party.
“We are not into a presidential contest (like the US) where we can project at least three to five leaders who would lead the Government. In India, the final outcome would depend on the number of seats a particular party wins after the election,” Tewari said while addressing a press conference here on Tuesday.
He said India practises the Westminster form of democracy where the party would contest the 2014 Lok Sabha on the basis of its programmes and its policies. According to him, this is not the first time that the BJP has projected a Prime Ministerial candidate.
Stating that in 2004 the party had projected former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee as its Prime Ministerial candidate, Tewari said in 2009 the BJP projected its senior leader LK Advani as the Prime Ministerial candidate.
“In both the elections, the BJP was routed by the UPA. But surprisingly the BJP has not yet learnt from its past mistakes,” Tewari said.
The Union Minister, however, admitted that the frontal organisations of the party as well as several senior leaders have batted for party vice president Rahul Gandhi to become the next Prime Minister of the country.
