Shillong, October 10: Indian batter Shubman Gill has been released from a Chennai hospital following his treatment for dengue on Sunday, October 8.

Sources confirmed to India Today that Gill’s platelet count had dropped before the team’s departure to Delhi for their match against Afghanistan, leading to his hospitalization in Chennai.

“Shubman Gill’s platelet count dropped, and he was admitted to a hospital in Chennai as a precautionary measure. BCCI’s medical team is also closely monitoring him,” revealed sources to India Today.

Gill left the Chennai hospital on Tuesday morning and returned to the team hotel, where the BCCI medical team will continue to oversee his recovery. While he missed India’s opening game against Australia in Chennai, he did not travel to New Delhi.

India is set to face Afghanistan in New Delhi on October 11, and the highly anticipated clash against Pakistan will take place in Ahmedabad on October 14.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that Gill would not travel to Delhi and would remain under medical supervision in Chennai. The statement from BCCI stated, “Team India batter Shubman Gill will not be traveling with the team to Delhi on 9th October 2023. He will stay back in Chennai and will be under the supervision of the medical team.”

Gill, a key Indian batter in the past year, was expected to play a significant role in the ongoing ODI World Cup. However, his battle with dengue just before India’s opener against Australia in Chennai raises concerns about his availability for the match against Pakistan in Ahmedabad on October 14.

In Gill’s absence, Ishan Kishan is expected to partner with Rohit Sharma as the opening pair. In the opening match against Australia, both openers failed to score, but India managed to secure a victory thanks to Virat Kohli and KL Rahul’s contributions.
