Srinagar: Army on Wednesday foiled an infiltration bid, the second in three days, by a group of heavily-armed militants in Machhil sector of Kupwara district, defence sources said.

A group of militants tried to sneak into this side from across the border in Machhil sector, 145 kms from here, this morning but alert troops engaged them in a gunbattle, the sources said.

They said the exchange of fire between the two sides lasted for some time.

A combing operation has been launched to track down the militants, they said, adding that there was no report of any casualty in the gunbattle so far.

This was the second infiltration bid by militants in the sector this week. Army troops scuttled an infiltration attempt on Monday by killing an unidentified militant. (PTI)
