SHILLONG, Oct 12: Miffed with the current pathetic condition of roads and poor quality of roads constructed throughout the state, Congress leader from Garo Hills, Saleng Sangma has called for black listing of contractors who do not adhere to the composition and designs of the road.
Taking note of the recent incident where a portion of the NHIDCL road from Tura to Kherapara caved in, Sangma said that he had earlier pointed out that the road was not being constructed as per the requisite composition.
“We cannot blame monsoon all the time. We always make all-weather roads here and how can the roads deteriorate so fast without any floods and landslides,” he questioned.
Lamenting that the NHIDCL turned a deaf ear to the concerns raised by him and engineers earlier, Sangma said that most of the roads in the state whether they are National Highways, PMGSY roads, or even the roads in Shillong deteriorate quickly.
Pointing out that tax payers’ money is going to waste and somebody must take accountability for neglecting road infrastructure, Sangma said that contractors will be serious only when the government fixes the responsibility and takes action against them by going even to the extreme step of blacklisting them.
