SHILLONG: Ri Bhoi police have arrested two out of three persons involved in the gang-rape of a 15-year-old girl at Umsohpai village on Sunday. The arrested persons are N Ronghang and Alvin Lyngdoh (24). The third accused, Nijus Marak is still absconding.

“So far, two persons have been arrested (in connection with the gang-rape of the 15-year-old) and we will hunt down the third one soon,” Ri Bhoi Superintendent of Police CVS Reddy said.

According to police, the 15-year-old girl hailing from Kohipar village in Kamrup district of Assam who is temporarily staying at Umsohpai, was gang-raped by the three accused at a rubber plantation farm in the village during the wee hours of Sunday.

It was learnt that the parents of the girl, who are labourers at the farm, were threatened with a machete by the miscreants. Out of fear, they fled the area following which the three accused chased down the girl and raped her.

In another incident, Ri Bhoi police arrested five persons including two minor boys who attempted to kidnap and rape a minor girl (14) at Umsning recently.

The arrested persons have been identified as Pynskhem Pamshong (23), Kishan Mawphniang (22), Richard Laloo (20) and the two minor boys who are 18 and 17 years old respectively. All the accused hail from Umsning. According to the FIR filed by the mother of the girl, unidentified miscreants who came in a Maruti van at around 6.30 pm on Sunday tried to drag her minor daughter into the vehicle while she was on her way to the grocery shop. The girl, however, managed to escape and came home.

A complaint was lodged the same night by the mother of the girl.
