Meghalaya mourns loss of veteran sports figure Jit Bahadur Bishwa

Shillong, Oct 13: The sports community in Meghalaya is in mourning as they bid farewell to the seasoned sports personality, Jit Bahadur Bishwa, who passed away on Friday. Born on June 27, 1927, Bishwa’s life was a remarkable journey filled with dedication and achievements that left an indelible mark in the realm of sports.
Bishwa served not only in the Indian Army but also in the British Army, earning his status as a war veteran. However, it was on the football field that he showcased his remarkable talent. He donned the jersey for the Gorkha Youngman Team from 1951 to 1962, a testament to his unwavering commitment to the sport. His excellence on the field did not go unnoticed, and he was selected by the Gorkha Army to represent the Services Team, a journey that took him to the Games in Nepal Khelmand.
He also ventured into professional boxing, leaving an indelible mark. In 1954, he participated in the All India Danapur Bihar Boxing Tournament, and in 1962, he graced the All India Calcutta Bengal Boxing Tournament. His influence extended beyond the field, as he served as the Vice President of the Y.M.C.A Club in Shillong.
