SHILLONG, Oct 16: Sofie Balarisha Rangtong, a Class IX student of Little Flower School, Malki, won the runner-up prize at the National Science Seminar 2023 which was held at the National Science Centre, Delhi, recently.
The seminar was organised by the National Council of Science Museums in collaboration with all states and Union Territories.
She was also awarded a scholarship of Rs 2,000 per month for 2 years.
Rangtong was selected to represent Meghalaya after she had bagged the first prize at the state-level seminar held earlier this year.
Speaking to reporters about her feat here on Monday, she expressed her gratitude to the National Science Centre for organising such an event which provided a platform for students like her to represent their state.
She added that it was an amazing experience which helped her expand her knowledge beyond the academic syllabus.
“I am also happy to be able to make the school and the state proud,” she remarked.
Talking about herself, Rangtong said she is interested in Biology, while adding that she aims to become a cardiologist.
She also expressed appreciation towards her teacher Joydeep Das for selecting her to represent the school in both the district and state level seminar.
The Headmistress of Little Flower School, Sr. Meris Dkhar, said that the student’s achievement is a proud moment for all.
She recalled that it all began when they had received an invitation from the office of the District School Education Officer (DSEO) to take part in the district science seminar.
A teacher of Little Flower School, Joydeep Das, said that the topic of the National Science Seminar was ‘Millets – A Super Food or a Diet Fad’.
He said that the preparation for this had started months ago, and initially, they had organised a competition among the six selected students at the school-level.
