SHILLONG: Legislators from the five districts of Garo Hills have vehemently condemned display of banners and placards during the agitation organised by women organisations which depicted Chief Minister Dr. Mukul Sangma in poor light.

“The elected representatives of Garo Hills, especially those who are in the ruling coalition, have taken a strong exception to such personal attacks against the Chief Minister,” Principal Secretary in charge of Community and Rural Development and Rongara-Siju MLA, Rophul S Marak, said in a statement issued here on Saturday.

Marak informed that the legislators from Garo Hills, in a meeting held to discuss this matter, have expressed shock and anguish over the attack on the Chief Minister’s identity issue. The legislators had stated that the remarks were uncalled for since the matter had already been dismissed by the High Court and even the Mao-mong Manda Mahari Ku-monggrikani clan has affirmed that Dr. Mukul Sangma belongs to the Manda Mahari clan.

“The action of the people concerned trying to indulge in vicious attack against him (Dr. Sangma) is a clear case of racial and communal discrimination, which in itself is a crime. We urge upon the Government to take strong action against the wrongdoers,” the Principal Secretary said, while adding that such remarks against the Chief Minister by members of a highly-civilized society was needless.
