2nd Caterpillar Festival stresses on env protection

SHILLONG, Oct 25: The 2nd edition of the Bam Niang Phlang Festival, organised by the Synjuk Ki Hima Ar Liang Wah Umiam Welfare Society, was held at Umsawmat village under Hima Lyngiong on Wednesday.
East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Rosetta M. Kurbah inaugurated the festival to highlight the consumption of caterpillar moths known locally as ‘Niang Phlang’.
The insects are generally handpicked and subjected to different kinds of pretreatment before they are consumed.
Synjuk Ki Hima Ar Liang Wah Umiam Welfare Society general secretary, Tambor Lyngdoh said that the objective of holding the event was to create awareness on the protection of the environment.
He added that they are also trying to highlight the importance of safeguarding the green spaces where these caterpillars breed.
The major attraction of the festival is the traditional food fest and hosting of traditional sports such as Mawpoin.
