SOHRA, Oct 26: The dark roads beginning the Mawkdok Dympep Valley will finally see some light as the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) inaugurated 49 solar street lamps along the way from Mawkdok valley point in four villages namely, Mawjrong, Dympep, Laitsohpliah and Sohrarim.
The project, which was completed in 14 days, is an initiative of the Swacchata Action Plan under the Special Campaign 3.0, by the Ministry of Finance.
The lights are aimed at being helpful for not only the villagers but also tourists who find it difficult to navigate the roads at night.
The solar street light project was inaugurated by the Chairman of CBIC, Sanjay Kumar Agarwal, in the presence of Sohra legislator, Gavin Mylliem, Chief Commissioner of Guwahati Zone, Vandana Deori among senior officers of CBIC and Customs department.
Agarwal expressed his happiness that the Customs Zone has taken the novel initiative of providing solar street lights with low maintenance and various lighting adaptability features to conserve energy.
Agarwal also appreciated the efforts of the zone in implementing the project within 14 days at a cost of approximately Rs 9 lakh right from the conceptualisation stage.
Gavin Mylliem, expressing his gratefulness to the CBIC, expressed that this will also support the vision of the CM solar mission and help the state government tackle the power crisis.
Mylliem added, “People from these villages have been looking forward to these streetlights, this will benefit the people and when proper illumination and lighting is at place, we do feel safer, thereby promoting safety and security.”
The low maintenance of the solar lights along with it being cost effective make it an appropriate alternative and also be the right step towards a green and clean Meghalaya.
