Assam magistrate suspended over bribery charges

Guwahati, Oct 27: An executive magistrate of office of the district commissioner, Kamrup district, has been placed under suspension days after he was caught red-handed accepting money as bribe during a trap laid by a team from the Assam vigilance and anti-corruption directorate.

It may be noted that Dipankar Kalita, assistant commissioner, Kamrup, was apprehended on October 16, 2023 immediately after he had accepted the demanded bribe money of Rs 3000 in a trap operation launched by officials from the Assam vigilance and anti-corruption directorate.

According to the allegation, the executive magistrate had demanded the bribe from the complainant for processing a matter related to land demarcation.

Subsequently, the public servant was arrested after sufficient evidence was gathered against him and a case (number 85/2023) registered at ACB police station under Section 7(a) of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018).

According to the superintendent of police, vigilance and anti-corruption directorate, Assam, the arrested magistrate has been produced before the Court of Special Judge, Assam here on October 17, 2023 and taken on police remand for four days for thorough interrogation and necessary follow up action.

“The Governor of Assam, therefore, in exercise of powers conferred under Rule 6(2) of the Assam Services (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 1964, is pleased to order that Dipankar Kalita, assistant commissioner, Kamrup, is deemed to have been placed under suspension from service with effect from the date of his arrest until further orders,” a notification issued here, read.

“During the period of suspension, the headquarters of Kalita, if released from custody, will be the same as his last place of posting, subject to review if deemed necessary,” it read.
