New York, Oct 27: The iconic Madison Square Garden has long been associated with legendary sporting moments. It’s a place where the world’s greatest athletes tend to elevate their performances, solidifying their status as all-time greats.
The arena has witnessed memorable achievements by boxers, basketball players, and, more recently, mixed martial artists since the legalization of the sport in New York.
From Conor McGregor’s historic victory over Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205, earning him double-champ status, to the unforgettable 2021 Fight of the Year between Justin Gaethje and Michael Chandler, Madison Square Garden has become synonymous with the grandeur of sports’ most significant moments.
Among those who have etched their names into the arena’s lore is Alex Pereira. In 2018, as a kickboxer, he delivered a first-round knockout of Yousri Belgaroui, successfully defending his Glory middleweight title in their third encounter. Three years later, Pereira made his mark as a member of the UFC roster with a spectacular flying knee finish against Andreas Michailidis at UFC 268. His crowning moment inside the Octagon came one year later at UFC 281, where he staged a remarkable comeback to defeat Israel Adesanya and claim the middleweight title.
As Pereira gears up for his third appearance at Madison Square Garden in as many years, his focus is now on the light heavyweight title. The title is up for grabs in his main event clash against Jiří Procházka at UFC 295. (AP)
