SHILLONG, Nov 1: The Rangbah Shnong of Wahlyngkien Mawphlang on Wednesday sought the intervention of PHE Minister Marcuise Marak over the long-standing issue of river pollution that has affected the community for over two decades.
The Rangbah Shnong of Wahlyngkien Mawphlang, Arbistar Lyngdoh, lamented that the sludge discharged into the Wailankin river from the Mauklam treatment plant has led to significant ecological damage, causing the loss of aquatic life.
The PHE Minister, Marcuise Marak, meanwhile, assured the residents of Wahlyngkien that their long-standing concern about sludge being released into the river flowing through their village would be resolved.
He said that a project for on-site sludge management treatment had received sanction with allocated amount for the project being around Rs 15 crore. According to the minister, the project would resolve all the issues.
Marak told the residents that the tendering process for the project would commence soon, and upon selecting a company to undertake the work, installation would begin. He assured the headman that the project is expected to kick off by January-February, 2024.
