SHILLONG: Former Rajya Sabha member Robert Kharshiing on Thursday revealed that a number of legislators in the State will seek change in the leadership of the MUA-II Government after the Lok Sabha polls next year.

Speaking to reporters here, Kharshiing said, “The legislators have suggested that I contest the Lok Sabha polls and then change the leadership after the elections.”

According to Kharshiing, his current feedback is that this particular State leadership is unpopular among all sections of society due to which the Congress might lose the Shillong seat.

Kharshiing attributed the reason for the loss of people’s faith in the present leadership to the prevalent law and order situation, the breakdown in communal peace and harmony, the shame of being named the least developed State of India together with Assam and Bihar by the Raghuram Rajan Report and the unbridled corruption in the State.

“Mizoram, Manipur, Sikkim, Nagaland and Tripura are now ranked higher than us in the report prepared by none other than Raghuram Rajan who is now the Governor of the RBI,” Kharshiing said. “To what depths of horror have we sunk in all respects? Money and corruption rule now. I am therefore seriously considering contesting the coming Lok Sabha elections,” he added.

He said he can contest the Lok Sabha elections from the NCP which has been his party since 1999 when it was founded and of which he was president till 2007.

“Both Congress and NCP are part of the UPA so I will be consulting leaders of both parties during my next visit to New Delhi,” he said, while adding that he has already begun consultations.
