SHILLONG: Independent legislator from Gambegre, Saleng A Sangma, has taken strong exception of the alleged harassment of students agitating for a separate Garo state.

Speaking on the floor of the House during the first day of the Autumn Session on Friday, Sangma termed the booking of the students under the Meghalaya Preventive Detention Act (MPDA) as totally unjustified.

The Independent legislator expressed surprise that while people who had attempted to kill him have not been booked, the youngsters were met out a different treatment.

“These people (the attackers) managed to get bail immediately after their arrest despite an AK-47 and large amount of gelatin sticks being seized from them,” Sangma said, adding that the attitude of the government would lead to a serious law and order problem.

“This would also encourage the youth to join the militant groups since that seems to be the only way the Government would listen to their problems,” Sangma said.
