U’khand Open Univ reaches out to students in far-flung regions

DEHRADUN, Nov 23: The Uttarakhand Open University is reaching out to students staying in remote areas to reach higher education at the grassroots level for a better future of this hill state.
This was stated by the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof OPS Negi during a daylong national seminar on ‘Role of media in open and distance education’. The varsity is also running diploma courses in all regional languages to reach out to the maximum number of students in an easier way.
Prof (Dr) Gupta said that the university is moving forward to create a channel named ‘Gyan Ganga’, and its positive results will be seen in future. The university already has a community radio station in Hindi. The University uses novel educational programmes, various modes of communication technology and contact sessions to make distance learning more effective.
The major objective of the University is to cater to the educational needs of the target groups to create skilled and knowledge based human resources for speedy upliftment and development of the State.
The University aims to impart quality education by maintaining high academic standards for tribals, women and marginalised students, he said.
Former Chief Minister and Ex- Governor, Bhagat Singh Koshyari addressed the seminar as chief guest. Prof (Dr) Baldeve Raj Gupta, Member of the Press Council of India, in his speech, said that the role of media is important in every field, especially in the field of higher education.
