SHILLONG: The hatching of eggs in three State farms have not been satisfactory, owing to which, the farms had to sustain a loss of Rs 13.88 lakh.
As per norms of the Animal Husbandry & Veterinary department for hatching of eggs, eighty per cent of the eggs should hatch successfully.
The CAG report has revealed that during the period 2007-12, the percentage of successfully hatched eggs in the three farms was lower than the norm fixed.
While in Umsning farm, the number of chicks hatched as a percentage of number of eggs set for hatching ranged between 5 to 75 percent, adding in Kyrdemkulai farm, the percentage was between 55 and 61 percent while in Rongkhon farm it was 12 percent in 2007-08.
Interestingly, hatching was done in Rongkhon farm only during 2007-08 and since then hatching could not be done due to the breakdown of machineries and it took more than four years to install the new machine by the department.
According to report, the farms produced hatching eggs at a cost of Rs 6 per egg during 2007-08 , 2008- 09, and 2009-10 and Rs 13 per egg during 2010-11 and 2011-12.
