Constitution of boundary panel
SHILLONG: The Centre is yet to respond to the State government’s plea to constitute a boundary commission to find an amicable solution to vexed boundary dispute with Assam.
“The State Assembly has passed a resolution urging the Centre to constitute a boundary commission, but the State Government is yet to receive any response from the Centre in this connection,” Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma informed the House on Wednesday.
“We have requested for a Commission to define the inter-State boundary between Meghalaya and Assam, with regard to the constitutional provisions, the relevant notifications and maps as well as the historical, ethnic and linguistic linkages,” Dr Sangma said while replying to a question by Sohra legislator Tistosstarwell Chyne.
The Chief Minister said that former Union Home Minister P Chidambaram had invited him along with Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi to know about Meghalaya’s stand on the constitution of the boundary commission.
“Gogoi informed Chidambaram that Assam Assembly had adopted a counter resolution rejecting Meghalaya’s proposal,” the Chief Minister said.
Dr Sangma also informed the House that the Meghalaya Government has resumed dialogue with its Assam counterpart to find a permanent solution to the vexed boundary dispute.
