SHILLLONG: The much delayed abattoir at Mawlai Mawiong is expected to be operational before March next year.

This was informed by Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Minister Deborah C Marak on the floor of the House on Thursday.

“At present, 70 per cent of the work has been completed and the abattoir is expected to be in operation before March, 2014,” Marak said while replying to a question raised by Mawlai legislator Embhah Syiemlieh during the Autumn Session of the Assembly.

The total cost of the project is Rs 22.83 crore.

“So far, the total amount paid to the contractor (Rishan Rapsang) is Rs 15.85 crore,” the Minister informed.

Earlier in September, official sources had projected a December deadline for completion of the slaughter house.

While replying to a supplementary question by Syiemlieh on whether it was safe to have the slaughter house in a location opposite to the dumping ground at Marten, she said that all necessary precaution has been taken to ensure that the abattoir remains free from any kind of pollution.

Shifting of Marten dumping ground

Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh said that there is no proposal for shifting the dumping ground at Marten, Mawlai Mawiong to another site at the moment.

“The government though is looking for a suitable site for another dumping ground which would cater to the needs of the future,” Lyngdoh while replying to a question raised by the Mawlai legislator.

Earlier, Syiemlieh also questioned the capacity of the existing dumping ground to take in the garbage considering the growth of localities within the city.
