SHILLONG: The State Government is drafting a letter addressed to the Prime Minister of India to amend the Representation of People’s Act to prevent migrants getting voting rights.
“We will move the Government of India to amend Representation of People’s Act to address the concerns of the people of Meghalaya regarding voting rights”, Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma told the Assembly on Thursday.
According to Dr Sangma, the amendment would safeguard the interests of the people of the State as far as voting rights are concerned.
“A letter is being drafted addressed to the Prime Minister to deal with the issue politically and administratively and this will give enough scope for the Government to adopt a methodology,” Dr Sangma said.
