Forced circumcision case
SHILLONG: The alleged forcible circumcision (a customary practice under the Islamic law) on minor boys who were inmates of the Meherbaan Orphanage in Laban by a doctor in-charge of the casualty ward of NEIGRIHMS, Dr Mohd Yunus has been criticized by the Seng Samla Shnong Shiliang Umkhen who questioned the authority of the doctor to perform the said activity stating that the same is unacceptable in any government institute and adversely affected the integrity of the institute as a whole.
In this connection, the youth body has demanded Dr Yunus to reply to the show cause notice within 7 days as on what or whose authority he carried out the circumcision, failing of which, the youth confederation is at liberty to take action.
Dr Yunus came into the limelight after an alleged forcible case of circumcision of minor boys between the age group of 9 to 15 years conducted by him and his team surfaced last week.
In this connection, the East Khasi Hills District Administration had ordered a magisterial probe headed by ADM DM Wahlang to delve into the details of the reported incident.
A delegate of the youth confederation of Shillong Umkhen met the Medical Superintendent of NEIGRIHMS recently, who expressed his ignorance about the incident which had transpired.
“It is very unfortunate that such an incident has happened which deeply affected the sentiments of the local people both in deed and principle. This is purely misuse of power by a government servant and as a physician, in a public institute, which is not meant for any religious rites,” publicity secretary of the confederation A Nongrum said.
