SHILLONG, Dec 6: The UDP on Wednesday said it would discuss the issue of the candidate for the Lok Sabha polls from Shillong with its Regional Democratic Alliance partner, the HSPDP.
UDP president Metbah Lyngdoh declared that revealing the names of candidates seeking to run on the party’s ticket would not be polite at this juncture.
Lyngdoh said that the election committee will meet to select the winner and that the issue will also be discussed with the HSPDP, but he would not reveal the names of the ticket contenders.
Despite the myth that voters support national parties in Lok Sabha elections, Lyngdoh sounded confident that the regional party will do well in the forthcoming polls and that they are almost finished choosing their candidate.  He assured that the UDP would choose the best candidate since the party had a strong chance of winning the polls, given that it received the largest vote share in the Shillong parliamentary seat during the 2019 general elections.
Regarding the nomination of a candidate for the Tura parliamentary seat, he stated that the Garo Hills party leaders have been asked to look into the matter.
