Assam STF nabs 6 persons during drive against fake gold, notes

Guwahati, Dec 12: As part of an ongoing crackdown against fake gold and fake Indian currency note (FICN) rackets in the state, a team from Special Task Force (STF) of Assam Police conducted an operation in a location under Basistha police station here on Tuesday and apprehended six persons in this regard.

Acting on a tip-off regarding dealing and delivery of fake gold and currency, a raid was conducted by the STF team at Lalmati.

“During the operation, six persons were apprehended while fake gold (in the shape of three boats) weighing 3.556 kg; 315 fake Indian currency notes of Rs 200 and Rs 500 denomination (amounting Rs 1,04,700); five mobile phones besides cash amounting Rs 1,08, 490 were seized,” sources said.

The apprehended persons have been identified as Debdas Halder (25 years); Santosh Mandal (40); Nitay Halder (48), all from Malda district (West Bengal); Manoj Kumar (40) from Udhamsingh Nagar district (Uttarakhand); Saddam Hussain (27) from Lakhimpur district and Shivam Kumar (22) from Pilibhit district of Uttar Pradesh.

BSF foils smuggling bid

In yet another success in its drive against trans-border crimes and smuggling, Border Security Force (BSF) troops deployed under Guwahati Frontier foiled an attempt to smuggle a huge quantity of sugar along the India-Bangladesh international border on Monday.

Troops of the 49 Battalion BSF seized 12397 kilograms of sugar worth Rs 7.65 lakh along with two engine-fitted boats meant to smuggle the items from India to Bangladesh during boat patrolling on the Brahmaputra river near 60 Bighachar village under Sukchar police station in South Salmara-Mankachar district.

The seized items are being handed over to the nearest custom office for further legal action.
