Shillong, Dec 15: A short environmental awareness film Ki Wah-Ki Thwei ka Jingim by Nicholas J Kharkamni and Melvin N Warbah was released by KHADC CEM, Pyniaid Sing Syiem at his office chamber on Friday.
Speaking on the occasion, the CEM lauded the filmmakers for coming up with the idea and taking the campaign towards the protection of the environment forward by making a meaningful film. In his effort to safeguard the environment, Kharkamni said that he has been trying to raise the issue of waste management since it is one of the major issues currently faced by the state. ‘I have spoken about the need to protect various water bodies through my campaign ‘My Meghalaya My Pride’.
Kharkamni lauded the efforts of the present EC in the KHADC for taking the lead to address the problem of waste management within its jurisdiction.
It may be mentioned the short movie depicts the ignorance of man concerning safeguarding the water bodies which in due course turns to endangering the pristine water bodies.
Meanwhile, the CEM informed that the KHADC in the past few months has been making efforts to address the problem of waste management through the Solid Waste Management Act, 2020 of the Council.
He further informed that they have framed the rules to implement the Solid Waste Management Act, 2020 and it will be placed in the upcoming winter session.
‘The KHADC is also trying to formulate sustainable solutions for handling of solid waste’.
According to him, the council is aiming to educate people about cleanliness and waste disposal management in their own homes.
“We have begun our initiative by distribution of garbage collection vehicles to localities, villages, and Himas,” the CEM said.
Concerned about the pollution of various water bodies including catchment areas and rivers, the CEM said “We would not like to see other rivers face the same fate like the Wah Umkhrah and Umshyrpi”.
