SHILLONG, Dec 15: A day after Meghalaya won the National Energy Conservation Award the Opposition Congress stated that the public is the right jury to decide an award.
“I do not understand the accolade for the state. How can we say Meghalaya is efficient in terms of power? Sometimes these awards do not speak the truth. In fact, we are power deficient,” Congress working president PN Syiem said on Friday.
He went on to say that people of the state know the best as to what award Meghalaya deserves in terms of energy conservation.
Meanwhile, the news has evoked a lot of reaction from citizens with many taking to the social media to expressing their disbelief.
One social media user wrote, “National efficiency award for the most deficient service. What a joke”.
Another user commented on the award picture shared in a social media platform, saying, “No shame. The electricity goes out every now and then and buying electricity is getting costlier. May be they received an award for buying electricity.”
“Good morning and what a joke; Merry Christmas,” wrote yet another user sharing the picture of the award.
It may be noted that President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday felicitated Power Minister Abu Taher Mondal on the occasion of National Energy Conservation Day and presented the National Energy Conservation Award for conservation of power and efficiency.
Giving examples of Meghalaya and other award-winning states in different categories, the President said the awards given towards energy efficiency and conservation will inspire others. She stressed the need to create awareness for energy conservation by adopting innovative technology.
Receiving the award, Mondal said it reflects the government’s commitment to sustainable practices and energy conservation. This will further motivate the state to persist in the endeavours towards a greener and more energy-efficient future, he said.
“This noteworthy achievement underscores Meghalaya’s steadfast dedication to energy conservation and efficiency,” Mondal added.
