SHILLONG, Dec 17: The KSU has asked the state government to go back to the 2016 version of the ARSSA to address any shortcomings in the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security (Amendment) Bill (MRSSAB).
KSU general secretary Donald V Thabah on Sunday said, “We do not know why they are amending it, but we feel it has become a hurdle and we feel it is high time that the government should rectify everything that went wrong and if possible go back to the original MRSSA.”
He made this statement while discussing the MRSSA Act’s current state of uncertainty and the delay in the state’s demand for implementation of ILP.
“When the MRSSA 2016 was amended (into MRSSAB), a clause was added that caught the Ministry of Home Affairs’ attention. Some people also filed a case in the High Court. That’s the situation because when the Ministry of Home Affairs was notified, the MRSSAB was put on hold,” Thabah continued.
He further pointed out that when the MRSSA was implemented in 2016, nobody, including the central government, was concerned about it.
As per Thabah’s assertion, pressure groups fulfilled their responsibility and it was due to their efforts that the MRSSA was enacted.
The KSU general secretary also made it apparent that they are still waiting for the ILP’s demand to be met even as they await the implementation of the MRSSAB.
